Groundwater

Besides harming lakes, salt in groundwatar is a problem.  Increasing levels are being detected at several City wells, and MG&E is pumping salty water into the ground at Odana Hills Golf Course, exceeding legal levels.

Low levels of salt in drinking water are a health hazard for people on low-salt diets.  Salt in freshwater lakes and streams has a profound effect on aquatic life.

When the groundwater becomes salty, it means that the streams and lakes are receiving water higher in salt all year.  When salty water runs off in the spring, it adds to streams already salty from groundwater.
